How to Network in today’s working world when it doesn’t come naturally

Let’s face it: Networking is really important. The phrase, ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.’ Is now used so frequently in today’s modern working world that it’s impossible to ignore. But what happens when some of us recoil at the idea of the idea of meeting new people, putting ourselves outside of our usual comfort zone and actively seeking new ways to connect?

Networking in today's world

Fortunately, there are ways to approach networking that aren’t as daunting to those of us who struggle to do so naturally. Moreover, these techniques are just as effective. Below, read all four to navigate your network.

Quality over quantity

Networking isn’t about having a significant business card collection or having multiple 10-minute calls with contacts every day without delving into anything of substance. Instead, focus on building genuine relationships with people who share common interests or goals as yourself.

Take some time to engage in meaningful conversations with a few individuals. Listen attentively, ask insightful questions, and find common ground with them. Building authentic connections will not only make networking more enjoyable, but your connections will go the distance with you.

Be realistic

Networking can feel overwhelming, and for those who err towards introverted personalities, networking events can be deeply uncomfortable. But instead of going in feeling like you have to work the room in a certain way that feels unnatural, set realistic goals for yourself. Instead of aiming to speak to 10 people, why not aim to have a deeper conversation with just two people? Instead of going up to someone and cold introducing yourself, why not join one group discussion, and aim to share at least one insight with the group? Breaking down the networking process into smaller tasks will help to alleviate some of the pressure and build up your confidence gradually.

Get techy

In a win for introverts, the modern world doesn’t require every significant transaction to be face-to-face. Indeed, networking can be just as effective online, as it is offline. So take advantage of things like social media and other online platforms to expand your professional network. From industry-specific groups on LinkedIn to online forums or webinars, there are a myriad of ways to connect with others from the comfort of your own home. Networking virtually allows you to connect with people at your own pace.

Practice, practice, practice

Like any skill, networking takes practice before you notice improvement, so don’t let setbacks or hesitations get in the way of moving forward and connecting with others.  Each networking opportunity is actually a great chance to learn and get better at it. Networking will become more natural to you with time and practice – so keep going, and remember; Building genuine relationships and fostering authentic connections are at the crux of successful networking, regardless of your personality type.
