A guide to good leadership

The complex problems we face today are many. Yet they create countless opportunities for people and societies to build new bridges for collaboration and innovation.

The secret ingredient - good leadership! It’s importance cannot be overstated.

Good leadership inspires hope. Fosters a sense of unity and purpose. Sparks positive change. And empowers people to create environments, organizations and societies where everyone can thrive.

Good leadership inspires hope, fosters a sense of unity and purpose.

Why? Because impactful leaders who are champions of good leadership can work across cultural, institutional and social boundaries.

They are decision-makers; who see possibilities where others see obstacles. They are change agents; igniting passion and momentum wherever they go. And they are connectors; fostering relationships that drive collective success.

They are leaders who have learned a different approach to leadership. Good Leaders who have found their COMPASS.

COMPASS

Confidence

Confidence in your abilities is crucial to good leadership. Confident leaders think positively about themselves and are willing to take the risks necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals. They believe in their own voice, that they bring a unique perspective to the table. Self-confidence means knowing it’s ok to not always be right and admit when they don’t have all the answers. Unafraid to show vulnerability, they bring their whole, authentic selves to the workplace.

Mindset

The right mindset is the foundation for good leadership development. It equips you with the right approach for leadership, for continual professional development, for leading change across boundaries, and for the challenges faced now, and in the future. We’ve split our good leader's mindset into three principles, Inclusive, Courageous, and Intentional.

Inclusive

Fundamental to being able to collaborate and work with difference. A broader range of perspectives leads to better decisions, less likely to be derailed by the unexpected, and diverse teams are stronger and more resilient.

Courageous

Leadership requires courage. Leaders must be able to learn from mistakes, to reflect deeply, try new things, take (responsible) risks and be vulnerable in front of others. Change in self, teams and organizations, and the systems they operate in, requires doing things differently, standing up, making mistakes.

Intentional

Good leaders need to be intentional with a strong sense of purpose. They need to approach their development, the individual, team and organizational goals they are working towards, and the changes they want to drive with real intent and determination. The Intentional mindset is a purposeful and committed way of thinking of what you're doing as you look to deliver on your purpose and goals.

Place

Building an understanding of the specific context in which you’re operating is a key component of good leadership, allowing you to apply your leadership skills appropriately. Leaders can adapt, at pace, to the situation.

Our programmes bring together people to learn to collaborate and lead together. These connections help leaders to cross the boundaries that exist in a place. They provide a support network, building connections and allowing new opportunities to emerge.

Attributes

Leaders need specific attributes to help them navigate the challenges of our ever-changing world, and take advantage of the opportunities it presents. We’ve identified 4 key behaviours good leaders need to thrive.

Agility

In these times of rapid change and complexity, leaders need to be agile. They need to be adaptable, flexible and able to work with people different to themselves. Agile leaders develop creative solutions and are continually learning and developing.

Resilience

Leadership can be hard, and leaders need to be resilient. They need to know how to cope with setbacks, look after themselves, take care of their teams, and make sure they don't get derailed. Leaders need to be able to bounce back and thrive when things get tough.

Collaboration

Building inclusive, innovative, and resilient teams is crucial to solving the complex, challenges we face. When we work better together, we build stronger outcomes. Good collaboration boosts the quality and quantity of work produced, increases morale in teams and helps build strong working relationships.

Innovation

Leaders need to be innovators to make change happen. They need to devise solutions to old and new problems alike, suspend assumptions about the right way to do things and experiment with different ways of working.

Skills

COMPASS identifies the skills good leaders need to develop to deliver in their roles, empower themselves, and those around them. Our programmes develop the key skills needed to thrive in today's world:

  • Active listening
  • Building trust
  • Decision making
  • Effective questioning
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Influencing
  • Problem solving
  • Reflective practice
  • Storytelling

What do we see in those leaders who have invested in developing their COMPASS?

Stronger decision makers

who assess the situation and context to choose the best course of action. They’re inclusive, curious and empathetic.  Good listeners, and effective questioners, they seek out wide perspectives to understand the system in which they operate.

Better change agents

who accelerate the pace of change, efficiently and effectively. They recognize how things could work better and understand how to transform systems. Through innovative new ideas and strong communication skills, they encourage and guide those around them to try new things, shift approach, and make things work better.

Effective connectors

who build strong relationships across diverse stakeholders.  They know that people are at the heart of every problem and every solution, and work across boundaries to build meaningful connections. Inclusive and adept at building trust, the good connector works to narrow the gaps that separate people, creating the opportunity for shared solutions.
