A unique opportunity for young people to consider the challenges faced on the island of Ireland and to explore how we can embed cooperation and collaboration into our ways of working.

All-island Legacy brings together young leaders from the island of Ireland, fostering cooperation, connection, and mutual understanding of the challenges faced by the inhabitants of this island. It will consider these challenges through an all-island lens, to develop more collaborative approaches and build knowledge and skills sharing between communities.

Participants will immerse themselves in the cities of Dublin and Belfast and work to build sustainable, mutually supportive cross-border relationships. All-island Legacy is a follow up to our highly successful Dublin Legacy and Northern Ireland Legacy and has been made possible through the Shared Island Civic Society Fund.

Day 1: Online Kick-off

Meet your fellow participants from across the island: connect, set intentions for the programme, and begin exploring shared challenges and opportunities. Together, we'll begin unpacking the social challenges facing both North and South. You'll explore key themes, start forming connections, and prepare for the immersive experiences ahead in Belfast and Dublin.

Day 2: Belfast

Experience Change in Action: Immerse yourself in Belfast’s social and civic landscape. Discover how communities are addressing social challenges and creating lasting impact.

Uncover Influence & Collaboration: Meet local changemakers and community leaders who are working to build collaboration and cohesion. Learn how they influence beyond formal power structures to drive social change and mobilise diverse groups to tackle shared challenges.

Tackling Big Issues Together: Engage deeply - ask questions, be curious, and challenge assumptions. Learn how leaders in Belfast are navigating complexity and working towards solutions that make a difference locally and across the island.

Day 3: Dublin

Fresh Perspectives: Dublin's Approach to Social Change - Continue your journey by exploring how organisations in Dublin are tackling similar challenges to those faced in Belfast. Experience different perspectives and discover how communities are creating a positive impact through innovation and collaboration.

Building Ideas & Shared Understanding - Engage with changemakers and leaders who are driving action on the ground. Compare approaches across North and South and begin shaping your own insights into how collaboration can bridge divides and create shared solutions.

From Inspiration to Action - Put your learning into practice. Work in teams to brainstorm, ideate, and develop creative responses to the social issues explored. The day will culminate in pitching your ideas to a panel, helping you take the first step from insight to impact.

We are a global not-for-profit leadership development organization on a mission to develop people who can cross cultural, social, and institutional boundaries. We work passionately with people to help push the boundaries of what is possible, all so that they can become those who can help us to work better together, be the connectors of our unique lived experiences and lead, with a difference.

Yes! The Common Purpose Charitable Trust was established as a charity in 1989. It is registered with the Charity Commission under the Registered Charity number 1023384.

The benefits of Common Purpose leadership programmes include gaining increased:

  • Agility in adapting to changing circumstances and environments.

  • Empathy to what other people feel, think and need. Seeing things from their point of view.

  • Influence in leading change with limited decision-making power.

  • Openness to new ideas, possibilities and perspectives, including views they might deeply disagree with.

  • Purposefulness in leading with intentionality, determination, commitment and resilience.

  • Self-awareness to their behaviours and outlook, and how they interpret and respond to situations.

When it comes to learning, there is no substitute for the power of real experience and fresh perspective. Our approach uses a robust behaviour and mindset change philosophy rooted in real life leadership challenges and experiences. To turn those experiences into real learning we follow five tried and tested steps that lead to habitual change in how people think, feel and act.

  1. Experience: Being presented with new experiences. Engaging with leaders across multiple boundaries and being immersed in new environments.

  1. Reflection: Learning activities to gain a deeper and more personalized understanding of the learning.

  1. Translate: Exploring how to relate new ideas and thought processes back into the learner’s role or context.

  1. Practice: Developing a set of leadership practices that can be used to turn new behaviours into habits.

  1. Assess: Embedding numerous assessments to help learners track their progress pre, during and even beyond the programme.

Experiential learning is a core component of our programmes.

Our programmes create a carefully constructed microclimate to explore real-life leadership challenges in a safe environment, often leading to the types of purpose-driven conversations needed to achieve transformative change.

We also focus on the importance of active learning, by getting people out of their comfort zones and into the world, seeing things, meeting people, taking part, and taking advantage of processes that stimulate multiple neural connections in the brain and promote memory.
