Main purpose of the role

Common Purpose is a not-for-profit leadership development organization. Our objective is to develop leaders who can cross boundaries. A not-for-profit, we run programmes in over 70 cities worldwide. Founded in 1989, over 4,000 people become Common Purpose Alumni every year.

We are currently looking for a dynamic and ambitious professional to lead CSCLeaders with a strong focus on Business Development. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to take the next step in their professional career. Operating within a dynamic and fast-paced environment you will be responsible for ensuring that our CSCLeaders team meets its business goals. We are looking for someone who shares our values and is passionate about leadership development. At the same time, a pragmatic and commercial approach is essential as well as the ability to influence at all levels. The successful candidate will have experience of working in team leadership and a track record of Business Development showing entrepreneurial initiative.

Overall Objectives and Person specification

The main purpose of this role is to lead the CSCLeaders team and to sell, design and deliver the CSCLeaders programme. This will require you to generate leads, drive business development, manage key clients and corporate partners globally, who provide the participants and sponsorship for our programmes, as well as developing and delivering the CSCLeaders programme to a high standard. It also requires the successful candidate to leverage the relationships with our existing partners in the Commonwealth to drive the growth of our business in both sales and curriculum development.

Scope of the role

A self-starter, with international experience, you will have a strong ability to work on your own initiative, working with existing clients and be entrepreneurial in generating new business leads. You will also have strong team leadership experience, as this role will require you to effectively manage the CSCLeaders team, in both a sales and curriculum capacity. 

This role entails, but is not limited to, the following

  • Leading and motivating an international team to deliver one of Common Purpose’s flagship leadership programmes
  • To be responsible for business development and sales through managing existing customer relationships and by implementing sales and marketing strategies generating commercial relationships within corporate, public and not for profit sectors, leading to new business and contributing significantly to Common Purpose’s growth
  • Planning and delivering our CSCLeaders programme to a high standard through the development of a high impact curriculum
  • Building the Common Purpose brand globally by developing key strategic relationships
  • Working closely with the wide network of Common Purpose stakeholders and inter-group companies and Common Purpose International entities to convene a senior and diverse participant group drawing from an ever-widening pool each year, addressing key areas of recruitment
  • To be responsible for the financial management of the CSCLeaders programme, monitoring and reporting accurately on the position to date and future financial status on time, on a monthly basis. 
Person specification

Essential qualifications, experience and competences:

  • Track record of sales and experience of working in a business development role and/or a corporate sales environment
  • Experience of recruiting high quality participants for leadership programmes from across all sectors
  • Experience of building and maintaining strong working relationships and partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders at senior levels, including the ability to create and develop opportunities without supervision on their own initiative
  • Self-starter who is target-driven and motivated – must be comfortable in a target oriented environment
  • Experience of a flexible approach to managing and prioritizing a high workload  and multiple tasks in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines
  • Experience of monitoring and reporting on financial and statistical information
  • Track record in inputting into sales and marketing collateral
  • Demonstrable sound knowledge of local, regional and international issues and current affairs 
  • Experience in designing and delivering high quality leadership training programmes
  • Experience of facilitating programmes and inspiring confidence in senior and diverse groups.
  • The ability to motivate, manage a small team and work effectively within a team.
  • Experience of managing budgets and making financial forecasts
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively with international members of Common Purpose senior management team from different cultures
  • Experience of establishing strong working relationships with colleagues from different functions and cultures
  • Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English
  • An understanding of and commitment to Common Purpose’s mission, values and behaviours
  • Experience of proactively identifying and solving problems
  • Able and willing to travel to international and remote locations for short periods of time and at short notice. 
     

Desirable qualifications, experience and competences:

  • 5 years’ + experience working in a similar business development or team leadership role
  • Experience of selling leadership development programmes/services to national and multinational organizations in a corporate sales environment
  • Ability to speak multiple languages.
